South Korea's tax chief and head of the National Tax Service, Jeon Goon-pyo, was arrested earlier this week amid allegations that he accepted bribes from a regional tax officer who wanted a promotion, it has emerged.
According to reports, Jeon received in the region of 60 million won from the junior official in the period between August 2006 and January 2007.
Despite denying the allegations, Jeon has offered to resign, reportedly stating that: "I believe the court will tell the truth because it...is not true.''
This represents the first time that such a state of affairs has arisen involving a currently serving NTS chief, and coming in the wake of a number of other corruption scandals, has caused public outrage in Korea.
