Problems Delay Launch Of 3G Service In Isle Of Man

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

15 May 2001

The launch of 3G mobile Internet service on the Isle of Man, which had been due to take place in May, has been postponed due to problems with handset software, thought to be similar to the difficulties experienced during the introduction of 3G service in Japan.

The problem arises when a handset switches from one transmitter mast to another, and Manx Telecom, the subsidiary of British Telecommunications which will operate the 3G service, says that sorting it out hasn't been helped by foot and mouth disease restrictions which prevented access to some of its masts on the island.

BT says that the service will still be launched this year, probably in the autumn, and that it still hopes to launch 3G services on the mainland by the end of 2002 or in early 2003. BT said it was not in dispute with NEC, the Japanese company which is supplying the handsets for the new service.

When the Manx service was announced in January, ImageCom said that it had contracted with Manx Telecom to supply its real-time mobile video communications technology, adding to the promise of advanced games and data plus voice services.

The initial applications on the network, the firm said, would include both links from fast-moving vehicles such as TT racers, and two-way links to enable experts at headquarters to advise mobile emergency services anywhere on the island.

However, yesterday BT admitted that so far it had only managed to develop rudimentary video-conferencing as an application for the high-speed phones, and said that the delay would give it the chance to offer music downloads and other more extensive internet services when the service is finally launched.
