A disastrous series of strikes at a port in British Columbia have been averted after a last minute deal was struck between the workers' union and the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association International (BCMEAI).
The deal - described as "tentative" - was reached between the BCMEAI and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union of Canada (ILWU) Local 514, and is the culmination of months of talks to prevent a strike.
The original strike had been planned for January 2 after workers became frustrated that they had not been given contracts since employment began in March 2007. However, the strike was abandoned as talks over their main concerns - working conditions, pension plans, benefits and wages - showed signs of progress.
