Police Capture Movie Pirate Duo In Australia

Police in Brisbane, Australia, have captured and arrested two men who have infringed copyright laws on over 14 million movies and television programs.

The duo – whose activities were picked up upon by private investigators hired by Hollywood movie companies – were found to be running a website which allowed over 40,000 individuals access to illegal copies of films and television programs.

Unbeknown to the pair, the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) had also been monitoring the situation closely and was also passing on information to the country's Federal Police, who arrested both men after search warrants were issued on December 3.

It has been calculated that men have generated around AUD50,000 (USD32,150) from the scheme, which amounts to around AUD10,000 per month. Most of the money made came from 'VIP' memberships, which allowed individuals unlimited access to downloads in return for a AUD10 monthly subscription fee.

Police have seized these profits, along with 3 computers and 1,200 DVDs.

The duo, who have each been charged with counts of copyright infringement and living off of the proceeds of crime, will be sentenced in Brisbane's Magistrates Court on December 18. If found guilty, they could be fined up to a maximum of AUD66,000, or spend up to ten years in jail.
