Leaked proposals contained within a UK government efficiency review conducted by Sir Peter Gershon would oblige accountants and certain groups of taxpayers to deal with the tax authorities online, according to reports in the UK media.
The 195-page review was submitted to the government in December, and according to reports contains plans to oblige all taxpayers and advisers deemed "e-capable" to use electronic tax filing services where available.
However, this proposal has angered the opposition Tory Party.
Shadow Paymaster General, Howard Flight argued this week that in the event of a dispute with the tax authority, companies and individuals would have no paper evidence to support them if they dealt with their tax affairs online, and should therefore be given the right to choose.
The Customs Department declined to formally comment on the proposals, which have not yet been officially released. However, a spokeswoman admitted to the Accountancy Age news service that the Department was "looking at all the options to encourage take up of electronic services as these are made available".
