by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

16 September 2004

UK law firms Pinsents and Masons are understood to be discussing plans to merge and create a national giant.

According to a report from the Legal Week news service, the talks between the two firms have been taking place for several months, and a vote on the proposed deal is expected within the next few weeks.

The merger, if it takes place, would reportedly create a firm with 240 partners and nearly 900 lawyers overall, bringing in revenues of around £150 million. Pinsents, which is known for its corporate work, has offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds, whilst construction and IT expert Masons is principally based in London.

Legal Week revealed that despite the advanced nature of the talks, both parties declined to comment.
