A group of hog and poultry farmers belonging to the Philippines' Agriculture Alliance has urged the country's President to consider keeping the zero-tariff measure for feed wheat imports in place for a further six months.
Executive Order 765, which allows for the duty-free importation of feed wheat expired on June 21. The government has yet to renew the measure, leaving farmers worried about the effects the 7% levy may have on the farming industry in future months.
In a statement released on June 23, the agricultural alliance said:
“We are requesting President Arroyo to extend Executive Order [EO] 765 granting zero duty to feed wheat imports.”
"The Cabinet Tariff Reform Matters Committee decision to recommend the scrapping of the duty-free feed wheat importation is unfortunate, as this will lead to higher corn prices [an alternative feed source] and, thus, cause greater harm to the consuming public who will have to pay more for pork, poultry, meat and even fish products."
The government has yet to comment on the Agricultural Alliance's request.
