Patricia Hewitt Claims EU Interference In UK Business Sector Decreasing

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

26 February 2004

Speaking following a meeting on Monday with a group of leading business executives to discuss increasing the dynamism of UK industry, Trade and Industry Secretary, Patricia Hewitt suggested that the flow of additional business regulations from Brussels appears to be slowing.

Acknowledging that reducing extra-governmental interference in the business sector is likely to be a slow process, the secretary of state explained to the Financial Times that:

"We've got to do more at a European level [to end over-regulation]."

She went on to add that:

"There's got to be more common sense in this debate and a greater willingness to analyse costs and benefits."

According to the FT, Ms Hewitt also suggested that the French and German governments were coming to feel the same way as the United Kingdom with regard to excessive bureaucracy within the EU.
