New York State Governor, George Pataki revealed last week that a reinstatement of the New York commuter tax will not be on the agenda when he delivers his forthcoming budget.
Although the tax was repealed in 1999, the current Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg wants it reinstated in order to help close the city's budget gap. Although Governor Pataki has dismissed the proposal as unwise and likely to damage New York's competitiveness in attracting business and investment, last week's announcement on WCBS Radio is his clearest statement yet on the issue:
'I don't want to predict what the Legislature may or may not do. But I can tell you that as I propose the budget in about a week and a half, I will not be proposing reinstating a commuter tax,' he told the radio station, continuing:
'We will look to see how we can help the Mayor, how we can help the city but that is not one of the ways I think would be beneficial.'
