Presenting the 2009 budgetary guidelines for Paris, a finance official at the town hall, Bernard Gaudillère revealed plans to increase local taxes in Paris by 9% from next year.
This rise in the four local Parisian taxes which include the housing tax, the developed and undeveloped land tax and the professional tax, follows seven consecutive years of stable rates. The increase will be debated at the Paris council on October 20 and 21, and voted on in December.
Elected in 2001, the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë had pledged not to increase taxes during his first mandate. With the opening of his term in March of this year, however, he confirmed a moderate increase.
The increase in local taxes allows Delanoë to honour his commitments to invest in schools, crèches and housing.
Paris is the largest community in France with a budget of EUR7bn. Investment in the city will rise to EUR1.9bn.
