Panamanian President-Elect Ricardo Martinelli has revealed he will make it his top priority to conclude an outstanding Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States.

Efforts to finalize a trade pact originally signed between Panama and the US in 2007 (under former President Martin Torrijos) have stalled several times over US 'tax haven' concerns.

Martinelli, who was elected as Panama's new President on May 3, has expressed his desire to wrap up the trade deal as soon as possible.

Figures released recently show that Panama exported around USD377m worth of goods to the United States in 2008. 96% of these exports were duty free. The US exported USD5bn to Panama over the same period.
