The European Commission has announced that it will be providing Panama with EUR6.65 million in aid over the coming four-and-a-half years, with the intention of assisting the country in the rebuilding of its judicial system.
According to the EC, reform to the system is necessary due to the fact that there are just 40 court-appointed defence lawyers to serve the entire population, and to the fact that around 60% of those in Panamanian prisons are currently awaiting trial.
The slow pace of legal procedures, and the large number of cases which are overturned on appeal were also cited as significant problems.
Speaking to the international media, an EC spokesperson observed that: "The judicial system doesn't meet the needs of the citizens."
It is hoped that the planned restructuring program will improve court facilities and access to justice for citizens and businesses in Panama, in addition to creating a more transparent and efficient justice system.
