It has emerged that the governments of Panama and Singapore have commenced the first round of talks that will lead to an eventual Free Trade Agreement between the two nations.
FTAs usually set out to harmonize regimes for intellectual property, government procurement, financial transparency, labor laws, environmental legislation and other areas that interest investors, and the current round of negotiations is due to last until May 21, it has been reported.
Panama, which recently voted in a new President, Martin Torrijos (son of Omar Torrijos, who ruled Panama between 1968 and 1981), has recently struck free trade agreements with El Salvador and Taiwan, and trade talks with the United States are ongoing, due to recommence on June 7.
The country is also hoping to be nominated as host for the permanent headquarters of the Free Trade Agreement for the Americas (FTAA).
