The US Treasury announced on Monday that Pamela Olson has been sworn in as the Treasury Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy.
Ms Olson has served as acting Assistant Secretary since April, and joined the Treasury as deputy to the Assistant Secretary in February 2001. Her appointment is especially notable, however, as she is the first woman ever to occupy the position.
Speaking late last week with regard to Ms Olson's swearing-in, Treasury Secretary, Paul O'Neill announced that:
'I am pleased to have Pam serving as the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy. She is committed to simplifying the tax code so it is fair, easy to understand, easy for taxpayers to comply with and easy for the IRS to administer; cracking down on abusive tax shelter transactions; improving the guidance process; and improving the revenue estimating process.'
The role of the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy is to supervise the provision of policy analysis, advice and recommendations relating to all aspects of domestic and international Federal taxation issues to the Treasury Secretary. Ms Olson will also be responsible for providing the official estimates of all government receipts for the President's budget, fiscal policy decisions, and Treasury cash management decisions.
