The Pakistani Collectorate of Sales Tax has seen a dramatic increase in its revenues in the first eight months of the fiscal year due largely to an aggressive campaign to close off loopholes and coax better performances from tax collection officials.
The figures show that the government has taken R16 billion ($276 million) in this fiscal year, up 45% on the previous year. Reports also infer that there has been a substatial rise in revenue from excise duty in the same period.
Much of the dramatic increase has been attributed to better planning within the collection department, especially in the area concerned with the business and trade sector.
The tax authorities have impressed on collection officials the need for extra vigilance to crack down on tax evasion, and the push to increase revenues looks likely to continue, with staff performance monitored on a monthly basis.
