Pakistan's Decision To Tax Agriculture Gains Support From PIAF

The Pakistan Industrial and Trader’s Association Front (PIAF) is supporting the government's recent decision to try to widen its tax base by bringing the agricultural sector under the tax net.

According to the PIAF's Chairman, Irfan Qaiser Sheikh, taxing the agricultural sector will be beneficial not only to government revenues, but also to the business community.

The move would allow the government to increase its revenue intake without inflicting higher tax rates on the economy during the current financial downturn.

Putting the measure into perspective, Mr Irfan Qaiser Sheikh added that, at present, although the agricultural sector accounts for 20% of the country's total GDP, it only contributes 1% to government tax revenues.
