Taxpayers in Pakistan are losing faith in the country's tax system due to a catalogue of significant errors, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has stated.
According to Mr Chaudry, taxpayers are currently grappling with a complex and flawed tax system which has not only left them confused, but also reluctant to comply with the current tax laws.
Speaking at a hearing of tax appeals on May 5, Mr Chaudry explained that, rather than simplifying the tax system, the repeated amendments to the country's income tax laws of late had instead encouraged large-scale corruption. Chaudry said that leaving the door open to such an activity was having a detrimental effect upon the economy, and would almost certainly prevent future growth.
The hearing revealed that around 500 taxpayers have so far filed appeals with Pakistan's apex court; a move which has prompted the Supreme Court to push for the Attorney General to simplify income tax laws so that individuals and foreign investors alike can regain their confidence in the system.
The hearing was adjourned until May 11.
