PCCW To Tackle China's On-Line Gaming Market

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

07 January 2004

It emerged yesterday in Hong Kong that cyber-conglomerate Pacific Century Cyber-Works (PCCW) is planning to move into China's on-line gaming market in association with South Korea's NHN Corporation.

On-line gaming is booming on the mainland, with annual growth rates of 30% or more, and represents a natural target for PCCW, which is investing heavily in broadband offerings around the world. The problem for PCCW is content, however, and the alliance with NHN will allow it to offer the latter's Hangame interactive entertainment platform in China. In South Korea Hangame already supports more than 50 internet games.

Even though on-line gaming is growing very fast in China, it is a highly competitive sector, and likely to become more so. There is also the piracy problem - recent assurances from the Chinese government that they are cracking down on software piracy have so far done little to dent pirate activities in one of the world's wildest market-places.
