Some 1,064 persons obtained their Maltese citizenship back under the new law providing for dual citizenship, enacted in February 2000. There were 1,795 persons who were confirmed as eligible of being granted their Maltese citizenship. Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg provided these figures in Parliament. The law gives persons who were Maltese citizens at birth but then emigrated and lost their citizenship to gain it back if they satisfy certain conditions. This measure was well-received by thousands of Maltese emigrants around the world.
Minister Borg also revealed that 4,229 were denied entry in Malta between the 1st of January 2000 and the 30th April 2001 because they were deemed as inadmissible.
