According to recently released figures, organised criminal gangs have been abusing the UK's tax credit system in order to reap easy rewards.
HM Revenue & Customs has revealed that between April and November last year, nearly 40,000 potentially illegitimate tax credit applications were stopped. In addition, the tax authority announced that between October 2004 and November 2005, over 22,000 claims were halted at the point of payment.
According to reports, the closure of the department's online tax credit portal in early December 2005 came after it was discovered that organised gangs of fraudsters were abusing the system by making multiple claims, using stolen information, or claiming for children that did not exist.
The HMRC stated earlier this month that the tax credit website would remain suspended for the foreseeable future.
