An online legal resource for prospective investors in countries belonging to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States is being developed by the University of the West Indies to help with efforts towards oncoming trade liberalisation.
The new tool, which is being constructed by the UWI’s Cave Hill campus in Barbados, is designed to act as a one-stop shop for both regional and international investors who need quick and easy access to information relating trade laws.
According to local newspaper The Herald, Cave Hill principal, Professor Hilary Beckles, who recently accepted a cheque from the Organisation of American States (OAS) for US$76,000 to help fund the project, noted:
“We’re all very concerned about the ability of these small nations to participate effectively in the current round of talks about trade liberalisation.”
He added: “This a project to place those laws online so that institutions with a trade or investment interest in the OECS can have access and understand the region in which they are investing.”
