A joint Oireachtas Committee has recommended that Ireland's Revenue Commissioners compensate taxpayers when they have miscalculated their tax liability.
In an RTE radio interview yesterday, Dick Roche, chairman of the All-Party Joint Committee on the Strategic Management Initiative said: 'If a compliant taxpayer suffers he should be recompensed. It can happen that in very extreme cases a compliant taxpayer can suffer greatly and where that does happen somebody says sorry and walks away from it. This is simply not adequate.'
He claimed that a system to tackle such errors can be introduced simply by reversing the process that the Revenue uses to collect monies so that it can in turn recompense taxpayers when necessary.
