Oil Firms May Face Additional Tax In France

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

12 September 2005

Speaking on French television last week, Finance Minister, Thierry Breton revealed that he will consider imposing a new tax on oil firms if petrol prices are not reduced.

Mr Breton explained that he would be meeting with oil industry representatives this week, and would call for "lower prices at the pump" for French drivers.

However, he added that:

"We do not rule out the possibility of submitting to a vote by deputies a special tax corresponding to a special situation."

The EC has called on European Union members not to act unilaterally to address what it has dubbed the "petrol prices crisis", and gathered members of the Oil Supply Group together on Friday for a meeting.
