Reports in the UK media have revealed that despite recently obliging British Telecom to reduce its charges for wholesale narrowband access to the internet, telecoms regulator, Oftel is unlikely to force the firm to lower its charges for broadband access.
Telecoms companies such as Cable & Wireless, Thus, and Energis have argued that BT charges too much for wholesale broadband access. However, recent reports have suggested that Oftel is unlikely to rule in their favour when it announces its final decision in October.
Director general of the UK telecommunications regulator, Dave Edmonds has been quoted as arguing that a more aggressive regulatory stance with regard to broadband internet access could discourage BT from investing in new technology, whilst additionally complicating the situation for alternative broadband suppliers, such as satellite operators.
