While most taxpayers have long since filed their 2003 federal income tax returns, the Internal Revenue service is reminding more than a million taxpayers that the October 15 extended deadline is drawing ever closer.
The IRS points out that taxpayers missing the October deadline face penalties of 5% per month of the unpaid tax.
More than 2 million tax returns were filed with the IRS in October 2003.
Taxpayers retain the option of filing electronically until October 15 and some may be able to file for free through the free file program. Taxpayers may also use tax software on their own computers or e-file through an authorized provider.
However, there are many taxpayers in presidentially declared disaster areas who have been granted additional time to file their tax returns. These extensions affect taxpayers in parts of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.
