It has emerged that the world's first live, multi-lot technology patent auction is to be held in San Francisco this Thursday.
Ocean Tomo, the firm behind the auction, specializes in understanding and leveraging intellectual property assets, and provides advice with regard to IP-related mergers and acquisitions, valuation, expert services and patent analytics. It additionally operates a $200 million IP-focused investment fund.
Sellers in the auction will include Siemens, BellSouth, AT&T, Kimberly Clark and 3Com, as well as mid-sized companies and notable individual inventors, and technologies covered in the auction include, but are not limited to the following areas:
Although the auction - unusual in that it will be a live event - is reportedly being eagerly anticipated by some, in particular individual inventors who have been unable to effectively license their inventions, some observers have warned that the event may simply fuel the litigious practices of patent 'trolls'.
