The OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) met last week in Antigua and Barbuda where the subject of the Caribbean region's relationship with third world nations with regard to free trade agreements was high on the agenda.
The group expressed concern in the meeting of the potential for third world agreements with CARICOM to come into conflict with certain arrangements granted to the OECS within CARICOM. Therefore it was decided not to support free trade arrangements with third world nations that allow duty free imports into the region under the Article 56 provisions.
The conference also discussed various developments surrounding the progress of the FTAA (Free Trade Association of the Americas) agreements and proposed further meetings between OECS officials and ministers to formulate proposals and approaches for the OECS in the ongoing market access negotiations.
Other subjects discussed included the establishment of a technical team with the specific purpose of briefing OECS members with regard to the WTO Cancun talks in Mexico in which the OECS plans to participate.
