Northern Ireland Demands Cross Border Tax Relief For Workers In ROI

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

08 February 2002

The North-South Ministerial Council (NSMC), a body which seeks to increase and faciliate cooperation between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, recently released the results of a study examining obstacles to cross-border mobility for Irish workers.

The NSMC report showed that recent reductions in income tax rates in Southern Ireland have meant that Northern Ireland residents who are obliged to work south of the border are, in some cases, being penalised.

In order to remedy this obstacle to employee mobility, the Council suggested that the Irish Government should consider offering cross-border tax relief to such workers. It also called for telephone charges to be standardised throughout the country.
