According to reports in the regional media, Hong Kong's Financial Secretary, Henry Tang has hinted that he does not plan to increase taxes in his maiden budget, expected this March.
The Hong Kong Standard quoted Mr Tang as revealing that a sales tax is unlikely in the coming years, and that there are no plans as yet to increase rates of taxation, or to broaden tax bands.
The Financial Secretary also announced that he would not be increasing salary and profit taxes in March, as measures in that area had been included in the last budget of his predecessor, Antony Leung.
"Although I haven't made the final decision, it's a good opportunity to give citizens room to breathe," he is reported to have explained.
