Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is arranging for a bill to impose road taxes in Abuja to be sent to parliament for approval.
It was disclosed that the proposed road taxes would be structured so that vehicle owners would pay a tax for entering the city based upon engine size and fuel consumption, as well as emission levels from their vehicles. This, it is said, could prove to be of some discomfort for those in Abuja who had purchased expensive, high performance cars.
The measure is being introduced in order to produce sufficient funds to maintain the city’s roads, and for the general development of the transport infrastructure in the city.
The road tax bill will join another for a proposed property tax in Abuja, which is already with the National Assembly.
