Lawmakers in New York on Monday revealed that they are considering a bill targeting the increasingly common practice of modem-hijacking.
According to an Associated Press report, the state legislation would allow telephone companies and the New York Attorney General to bring lawsuits against those who seek to mislead internet users into downloading software which instructs their modems to make expensive international calls.
A vote on the proposed law is expected in June.
"This is a new kind of thievery and it takes new kinds of law to deal with them," co-sponsor of the bill, Assemblyman Richard Brodsky (D - Greenburgh District) explained to the AP.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, the New York bill is the firstly to specifically target modem-hijacking. However, other states are reportedly considering wider legislation which addresses the practice.
