The Bermuda Telephone Company (BTC) has implemented a state of the art system which will bring the Island's telecommunication facilities into line with the latest standards. The new technology will replace equipment which in some cases is up to 100 years old with fibre optic technology.
Entitled the 'Digital Subscriber Line' (DSL)
it provides customers with high quality voice and broadband services
such as interactive video games, online shopping and video conferencing.
The service utilizes the customers' usual telephone line to deliver high
bandwidth to homes and small businesses alike.
Monique Bois, the BTC's assistant vice president of marketing and corporate
communications, said: 'Bermuda has one of the highest penetration of lines
per resident in the world and DSL will assist multiple service per single
connection so that, for example, a household can increase the number of
lines per household, making it more feasible for service providers to
deliver a greater number of services to customers as needs expand.'
BTC marketing manager Dennis Emery added: 'DSL technology is aimed at the residential market and the single line (small business) customer because one of the advantages of DSL is that they can use the Internet and the telephone at the same time, increasing speed and quality of service.'
BTC says it expects the service to be widely available across Bermuda by next year.
