New Survey In Jersey Reveals Business Confidence Down

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

15 August 2002

Reporting on the results of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce's latest business sentiment survey, the Jersey Evening Post revealed on Tuesday that there has been a marked decrease in confidence in Jersey's economy over the past three months.

According to the JEP, 60% of firms which took part in the poll told the Chamber of Commerce that they were less confident in what the future holds over the coming year than they had been in March, with just 3% of businesses expressing more confidence.

The CoC survey questioned a representative 20% sample of the Island's private sector workforce, taking in the finance and tourism sectors, and the construction and distribution industries.

The Jersey Evening Post report revealed that tourism-related businesses have suffered the most, reporting a decrease in both turnover and profitability to June on the same quarter in 2001. However, somewhat more positive results were reported by the distribution, transport, and communications industries.
