The Bulgarian government has appointed Toshko Todorov the position of Deputy Executive Director of the National Revenue Agency. Todorov will lead three teams specializing in audit and tax compliance and will head the country’s information exchange authority on value-added tax.
The announcement was made on August 3 following a meeting with Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Simeon Dyankov, and Head of the Tax Authority, Krasimir Stefanov.
The Prime Minister noted a report presented by the Tax Authority on its performance during 2006-2009. He underlined that while tax compliance is relatively good, particularly in value-added tax, the tax authority would need to redouble efforts to crackdown on tax evasion during the crisis in order to secure much needed revenues.
It has been estimated that the grey economy is worth 30% of total Bulgarian economic activity.
