The official swearing-in ceremony of Mr Christofias took place before the House plenary and 250 official guests, after which Mr Christofias delivered his program speech.

Later, Mr Christofias was received at the Presidential Palace by the outgoing President Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, who officially handed over to him the reins of government.

During his weekly meeting with the House of Commons on Wednesday, the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown congratulated the President elect Mr Christofias on his election, stating that:

“I congratulate the new President-elect on his victory. Cypriots have clearly demonstrated that they want a comprehensive settlement, or progress towards it, in the next few months. I have invited the new President to come to London to talk about these issues, and I believe that there is new hope that such a settlement can be achieved”.
