Senators Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) and George Allen (R-Virginia), and Representative Christopher Cox (R-California) on Tuesday introduced a new piece of legislation designed to extend the ban on internet taxation.
The bill makes permanent the (already extended) moratorium on internet taxation set to expire in 2007, seeking to ban taxes imposed on internet access, discriminatory taxation of online purchases, and the multiple taxation of products or services purchased online by several state authorities.
In a statement released following the introduction of the proposed law, Senator Wyden announced that:
"The Internet Tax Freedom law has created a level playing field, stopping unfair and discriminatory tax schemes that would wall off the internet to many consumers and make e-commerce impossible for business owners. Internet users and entrepreneurs who breathed a sigh of relief at this law's extension should have the security of knowing its protections will never go away."
