Giving his first interview as new head of Australia's Musixc Industry Piracy Investigations (MIPI) body last week, Michael Kerin warned internet service providers (ISPs) in the country that he would be getting tough on the facilitation of copyright infringement.
Although the former Quantas investigator admitted to ZDNet Australia that he was currently in the process of meeting music industry representatives in order to "fully form" his opinion on illegal peer-to-peer downloading and other forms of digital piracy, he stressed that MIPI will continue to force ISPs to put in place 'take down' regimes for copyright infringing customers.
Speaking with regard to the legal action currently underway against Swiftel over the ISP's hosting of Bit Torrent networks, which can be used to illegally download copyrighted content, Mr Kerin observed that:
"I suppose some industry associations may feel the law is grey. However, the Swiftel case will allow us to put that into perspective. If they're going to be reckless with the law, they will be targeted."
