New laws have come into effect in Malta to make it easier for government departments to liaise and exchange information with one another in a bid to eradicate tax evasion.
Amended legislation which came into force on January 1 is designed to allow the Department of Internal Taxes, the Value Added Tax Department and the Department of Social Services to cooperate more closely in cases where tax evasion or social security fraud are being investigated. The Tax Compliance Unit is also expected to contribute to the new initiative.
Information obtained from tax and VAT returns will be shared by the various government agencies in the scheme and the new legislation will streamline data gathering methods in order to make information more accessible to each department.
The Government is also planning to invest around Lm90,000 (EUR210,000) to help fund the enforcement activities of the Social Benefits’ Directorate Against Fraud.
