New Initiatives In Gibraltar's E-Commerce Drive

by Lisa Ugur, Tax-news.com, London

01 June 2001

The government of Gibraltar has long been striving towards the goal of making Gibraltar an International e-Business Centre. Having appointed Darion Figueredo as its full-time E-business Development Officer in February 2001 and then a month later passed the Electronic Commerce Ordinance, the government is not letting the grass grow under its feet. This month the goverment is conducting an e-business survey and a directory of Internet-related services in Gibraltar is being prepared by the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Telecommunications' e-Business Development Unit.

On the government's website, a statement from Darion Figueredo says: 'The Government of Gibraltar has been developing strategies to create an environment for businesses to trade electronically, speedily and securely; based on a framework of telecommunications, infrastructure and legislation to facilitate the growth of e-commerce. The upcoming liberalisation and regulation of telecommunications, the introduction of The Electronic Commerce Ordinance (TECO 2001) and the adoption of EU directives into local legislation will give Gibraltar a great advantage over other offshore jurisdictions competing for the same market. The creation of an e-Business Development Unit is a positive move in establishing Gibraltar as a global e-commerce hub and the development of Gibraltar into a modern information society.'

The Gibraltar E-Business Survey June 2001, which will soon be mailed to local businesses, is concerned with e-business activity in Gibraltar's business community. The purpose of the survey is to gain feedback on the current use of e-business in the various business sectors as well as provide present and future expected trends in this area. It can, of course, be filled in and submitted online, and local businesses with access to the Internet are being encouraged to do so no later than Friday 22nd June 2001.

Accompanying the survey is the directory of local businesses that offer Internet related goods and/or services. Listing in the directory - Gibraltar 1.0 - is free and will be used for general distribution and made available on the site. Any business that would like to be included in the directory should fill in their details and submit the form online.

The newly-revamped e-commerce section of the goverment website and the Gibraltar E-Business Survey June 2001 can be accessed at www.gibraltar.gov.gi.
