In a recent interview with the Irish media following her assumption of the role of chairwoman of the Irish Software Association, Bernie Cullinane pledged her support for the controversial software patent directive, forced through by the European Commission earlier this year, and currently awaiting a second round of scrutiny from the European Parliament.
Urging MEPs not to block the legislation or impose significant amendments, the new ISA chief told the Irish Times:
"We don't need any further dilution of the current situation on patents."
She went on to add that:
"We do need to look at how the US is developing its software industry and a removal of the patent could weaken venture capitalists' appetites for investing in new innovative companies."
