New guidance has been issued by the United Kingdom's government for taxpayers seeking to appeal decisions by the Inland Revenue.
The booklet published by the Department of Constitutional Affairs offers guidance for taxpayers on the process of taking appeals to independent tribunals, giving them advice about preparation for a hearing and what happens during and after the hearing.
The guidance covers decisions relating to tax, National Insurance and other related matters.
Tribunals Minister Lord Filkin commented: "This new booklet stresses the judicial independence of tax tribunals and raises awareness of the important work they do. It helps to build confidence in them as impartial tribunals."
The tax tribunals' chairmen and members are appointed by the Lord Chancellor. Their job is to look at each appeal impartially and decide whether the decision is accurate or acceptable according to the facts and the law.
The publication has the backing of tax tribunal members and the Inland Revenue.
