It has emerged from national media reports that a Chinese private investment firm is to launch a new airline based in the Pacific jurisdiction of Vanuatu.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, sources within the civil aviation administration of China’s Hubei province (from where the new firm originates) revealed that the Southern Pacific International Airline Company, registered in Vanuatu in July 2003, is scheduled to begin operating services from the Pacific state within eighteen months.

It has been revealed that the firm initially plans to launch two domestic services within Vanuatu, followed by international routes linking the country with Australia and New Zealand. In the longer term, the company intents to open up longer haul routes, including to China.

Insiders stated that the new airline will help Vanuatu develop both its transport infrastructure and tourist industry.
