The Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) has a new Guernsey president, Peter Niven, and already Mr Niven has lined up an interesting-looking debate in Guernsey featuring the chief politicians of Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar as part of the CIB's programme for 2000.
Laurie Morgan, Frank Walker, Donald Gelling and Peter Caruana will take part in an Island Question Time session under the chairmanship of Brian Walden on 9 October. Peter Niven said of the event 'This is going to be a major contribution to the debate about the future of our finance sector in the face of external threats. This will give islanders the chance to contrast and compare the attitudes of the leaders from the four jurisdictions and also assess how closely they are working together.'
Apparently Labour MP Austin Mitchell, well-known as a staunch opponent of offshore financial centres, has declined to attend the question and answer session. Mr Niven said 'We invited Austin Mitchell to come as well as he is such a critic of the offshore islands. He declined.'
Mr Niven is retail director for Lloyds TSB in the Channel Islands and has taken over as local centre president of the CIB from Ken Gibbs. He is clearly looking forward to October's event, and said 'We feel that our question time session will be of such significance that CIB members in the other jurisdictions will want to see and hear what goes on. We are investigating the practicalities of live links with the other centres. The costs of this will, of course, be significant but if we can fund it we will do it. The session will be opened up to non-members of the CIB and further details will be published shortly.
More generally Mr Niven is aiming to put the CIB well and truly on the map over the coming months. He said We certainly have to raise our profile and increase our influence as a professional association. During my year of office I want to ensure that all our local members become more aware of what the CIB can do for them and, in particular, how the local centre can add value to them personally and in their business lives through the programme of events we have developed and, of course, our educational qualifications which are second to none.
