The Governments of the Netherlands Antilles and Suriname have reportedly agreed to start negotiations on a bilateral double taxation avoidance agreement, as the Caribbean jurisdiction continues to expand its economic links in the region.

According to an online report by Caribbean Net News, negotiations between the two governments towards the agreement, which will also include anti-evasion provisions, will commence in the first week of February, 2008.

“We are moving in the right direction to deepen our relationship with the region, especially with CARICOM countries," State Secretary of Finance of the Netherlands Antilles, Alex Rosaria, was quoted as observing.

In June, Rosaria travelled to the South American state of Columbia to discuss proposals for a bilateral tax and customs agreement. Rosaria has also said that a double tax avoidance agreement with Venezuela is "practically finalised", and revealed that a Netherland Antilles government delegation plans to visit Brazil, Latin America's largest economy, later in the year.

The State Secretary also announced that "firm" tax treaty negotiation agreements have been reached with Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago, while talks with Jamaica are ongoing.
