Nethelands Antilles Senator Calls For A Simplified Tax System

by Mandy Robinson, Tax-News.com, London

28 September 2001

Democratic Party Senator for the Netherlands Antilles, Frank Mingo, has called for a simplified version of the country's taxation laws before the draft ordinance for line accountability is introduced; otherwise, he argues, the effect of the ordinance would be significantly reduced.

Known as the 'ketenaansprakelijkheid' the draft ordinance holds contractors responsible and accountable for salaries, benefit entitlements and taxes. Senator Mingo said the current system of taxation is complex and not user-friendly with employers forced to work out wages in three ways: in calculating wage tax; to deal with SVB premiums; and to include insurance premiums. Consequently, it is difficult for employees to authenticate their pay slip deductions and it is problematic for the government when controlling the necessary payments from employers.
