NZ Government Promotes Charitable Giving With Tax Rebates

New Zealand's Prime Minister, John Key, has proposed introducing tax incentives which would encourage individuals to give more to charity.

Mr Key explained that the proposal would encourage individuals and businesses to contribute more time to local charities by offering them tax rebates on hours spent working on their behalf.

Current laws only allow tax rebates to be given on monetary donations.

The country's Revenue Minister, Peter Dunne, also revealed that the government is working towards devising a tax concession system for "gifts in kind," which would cover the money made from items donated to a charity auction, for example.

The proposal has been welcomed by Diabetes New Zealand, who have praised the Prime Minister for keeping in touch with the needs of local charities during the financial downturn.
