Following the announcement last week that tax revenues in New Zealand were $358 million higher than forecast for the three months ending September, Opposition politicians have variously called for tax reductions and more spending on the country's roads, according to a New Zealand Herald report.
However, Finance Minister, Michael Cullen has ruled out the possibility of going on a spending spree with the extra tax money, arguing that this would lead to cuts later, when the revenue figures swing back round.
Responding on Tuesday to Parliamentary questions regarding his plans for the money, Dr Cullen announced that: 'The government's policy is to maintain stable fiscal and economic settings.'
