New Zealand’s Trade Minister, Tim Groser, has welcomed the news that the European Union (EU) has removed all remaining export subsidies for dairy products.
The EU had introduced dairy export subsidies in January this year, but the European Dairy Management Committee has now decided to reduce the level of export subsidy refunds on butter and butter oil to zero. This means that export refunds for all dairy products are now set at zero. Tim Groser commented that he considered that to be a very positive development.
“International dairy prices have shown a marked improvement across the board in the last three months, reflecting a more positive outlook in international dairy markets,” he stated.
"In response, the European Union has been gradually scaling back its export subsidies since late October. The removal of remaining export subsidies sends an encouraging message to the international dairy market and I welcome that."
"I will continue to make the point in my international contacts that it is important not to revert to subsidies as a response to market conditions,” he continued.
“All countries with dairy industries have an interest in a healthy international market. This is a positive development toward that end.”
Australia’s Trade Minister, Simon Crean, and its Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke, have also strongly welcomed the news from the EU. However, the US Dairy Export Incentive Program remains in place, and they both urged the US to follow the EU lead on this matter and end their dairy export subsidies as well.
"Given that the US introduced dairy export subsidies in response to the EU introduction of subsidies, the US has no excuse to continue with this program," Simon Crean argued.
Burke reiterated that: "The EU decision is good news for Australian dairy producers, but the next step is for the US to also end dairy export subsidies.”
