According to reports in the national media, the government of New South Wales has expressed concern regarding an application to patent the term 'Made in Australia'.

Speaking to ABC News, Small Business Minister, David Campbell called on the federal authorities to ensure that the application is rejected by IP Australia.

"I think it's difficult to imagine the impact it would have on the economy, the lack of confidence consumers would have that a product was in fact made in Australia, the lack of access to small business to have 'Made in Australia' put on their exports or on their local production," he argued, adding:

"That's why we have to raise this as an issue, make sure that the application is refused."
