Moscoso Urged To Block Panama's New Telephone Tax

by Leroy Baker, Tax-News.com, New York

12 February 2004

Panama’s National body for Science and Technology has urged President Moscoso to veto a new system of taxation on telecommunications.

Currently, a $1 levy is placed on international telephone calls. However, this is soon to be replaced by a 12% tax which will also extend to internet communications.

The National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) is fearful that the new taxation system will impede the nation’s technological development by placing additional costs on Universities when they communicate with international research bodies.

Consequently, SENACYT is asking the president to reject the measure, which was recently approved in a special legislative session.
